When we first meet the dog we get a feeling of the hopelessness and loneliness of the ranch. When Carlson is trying to convince Candy that the dog needs to go he talks about how useless and old and smelly the animal is. Candy is very upset about losing his dog but knows that he has no chance of saving him. Candy says that he wishes he could get shot and put out of his misery once he is too old to do anything. As we get towards the end of the novel you will see how the dog also symbolises other important things in the novel.","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[],"more":0}]},{"id":"13418321","dateCreated":"1249274947","smartDate":"Aug 2, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"john_peterson","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/john_peterson","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1247821656\/john_peterson-lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/year9thelakes.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/13418321"},"dateDigested":1532428552,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"Symbols","description":"Candy's old dog is a symbol of what happens to migrant workers when they live alone and can no longer do the work of the farm or ranch.

If there was someone on the ranch that really old working, not doing a good a job as what they used to and stinking up the place I'm sure that the other workers would complain.

\nI personally don't think that it is the right thing, but i agree that that is what they did in those days.","dateCreated":"1249555165","smartDate":"Aug 6, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"Jacqui_tait","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Jacqui_tait","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]}],"more":false},"comments":[]},"http":{"code":200,"status":"OK"},"redirectUrl":null,"javascript":null,"notices":{"warning":[],"error":[],"info":[],"success":[]}}
